Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou believes that Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal's half-time spat at Anfield 'shows they care'.

The Spurs boss was asked about the incident after Tottenham's 4-2 defeat to Liverpool and refused to criticise his players despite the fact they needed to be separated by teammates.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS about the clash, he said: "The lads care, so they were frustrated.

"They aren't happy with the current situation and want to address it.

"It just shows they care, so I don't need to address it."

Romero and Emerson had to be forcefully separated by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

With Spurs trailing 2-0 at the break, Romero stormed over to the Brazilian to have a few words with him after the Brazilian, playing at left-back, endured a horrible opening 45 minutes having lost Mohamed Salah for Liverpool's opener.

However, the former Barcelona man started to get closer and closer to his teammate.

Before the matter could escalate, Vicario charged over from his goal to break it up and dragged a visibly fuming Romero away.

It was a strange moment, and it didn't spark anything from Spurs as they found themselves 4-0 down before adding some respectability to the scoreline with goals from Richarlison and Heung-min Son.

And Postecoglou wasn't the only man who didn't mind it, with Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane also deciding not to condemn it.

Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage of the match, he said: "I generally don't mind that kind of behaviour because it means you care about the game, but they should have that type of aggression in their defending and in their play.

"Spurs have been poor - I don't mind that, but you've got to bring that aggression to your general play, which we've not seen from Spurs."

Overall, it was an afternoon to forget for Tottenham, who have now lost four consecutive league games.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring when he headed in Cody Gakpo's excellent cross.

It was 2-0 just before half time when Andy Robertson tapped in after Vicario saved Salah's shot.

Spurs failed to muster a shot on target in the first 45 minutes, and they were 3-0 down soon into the second half as Gakpo headed in from Elliott's cross.

Elliott then scored the goal of the game when he smashed in a stunning strike from the edge of the box.

The Brazilian got Spurs onto the scoresheet when he tapped Brennan Johnson's low cross beyond Alisson Becker.

He then set up Heung-min Son to create a nervy finish at Anfield, but in truth, there was never likely to be a mighty comeback from Tottenham.
