Hertha Berlin loanee Aymen Barkok undergoes surgery after being taken to hospital following attack in Berlin bar

Hertha Berlin loanee Aymen Barkok was rushed to hospital after being the the victim of a bar attack.

The 25-year-old was enjoying a night out in the German capital on Saturday night when he was targeted with a vicious physical assault.

Barkok suffered facial injuries and was rushed to hospital where he stayed overnight before undergoing surgery on Sunday.

As a result, he will miss the rest of the campaign to recover physically and mentally from the traumatic event.

Hertha Berlin confirmed the attack on social media, writing in a statement: "We were horrified to learn yesterday that Aymen Barkok was physically attacked in a Berlin bar during the night from Saturday to Sunday and had to be taken to hospital with facial injuries.

"Aymen had a successful operation yesterday, Sunday, but will not be available to us for the time being.

"We wish you a speedy recovery, Aymen! We are thinking of you."

Meanwhile, Barkok's parent club Mainz said: "The thoughts of everyone at 1. FSV Mainz 05 are with midfielder Aymen Barkok, who is recovering after an attack in a Berlin bar on Saturday night.

"Get well soon, Aymen."

Barkok joined Hertha Berlin on loan from Bundesliga side Mainz in January, dropping down to Germany's second tier in the process.

Since then the midfielder has made 13 appearances for the club, scoring one goal to put them in play-off contention.

Barkok started his career with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2016 and scored four goals in 64 games, helping them to Europa League and German Cup glory in the process.
