Manchester United vs Burnley predictions

Manchester United have put their supporters through the ringer in the last week.

Three-nil up and cruising in the FA Cup semi-final against Championship side Coventry City last weekend, United contrived to concede three times in the final 20 minutes.

They were then saved by a marginal offside decision in the last minute of extra time, as the Sky Blues had a ‘winning’ goal chalked off.

United ultimately won the penalty shoot-out, but their flaws were laid bare at Wembley Stadium.

A few days later, Erik ten Hag’s team twice went behind at home to last-placed Sheffield United. They came back to win 4-2, but it was yet another occasion on which the Red Devils were unconvincing.

Progressing to the FA Cup final, however they managed it, means United's season is still alive. They will be underdogs against Manchester City, but anything can happen in a one-off game.

Not that their Premier League campaign is completely dead. United will miss out on a top-four finish and Champions League football, but it is important that they qualify for the Europa League.

Given how little success they have had since Alex Ferguson’s retirement 11 years ago, United cannot afford to turn their noses up at the secondary continental competition.

Winning the FA Cup would see them through to the Europa League, as would a top-six finish. Ten Hag’s side hold a three-point lead over seventh-placed Newcastle United ahead of the weekend, but the Magpies have a superior goal difference.

Burnley have plenty to play for too. A 4-1 thrashing of Sheffield United last time out kept their survival hopes alive.

It would take a huge effort for the Clarets to climb out of the bottom three from here, but a victory at Old Trafford could see them end the weekend level on points with Nottingham Forest in 17th place.

Manchester United vs Burnley betting tips

Manchester United are chasing European football while Burnley are battling to avoid relegation.

Manchester United to win and both teams to score - 7/5 (Paddy Power)

Manchester United have got quite lucky this season. You may be surprised to learn that only five teams - Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal - have conceded fewer goals in 2023/24.

That is despite the fact that United rank joint-17th for expected goals against. In other words, only Luton Town, Sheffield United and West Ham United have given up better chances than the Red Devils across the course of the season. Burnley, incidentally, are level-pegging with United.

That is damning of Ten Hag, who has proved utterly unable to fix this chronic issue. Injuries have not helped, but the Dutchman’s organisation skills have left a lot to be desired.

With that in mind Burnley will have some joy at Old Trafford, where United have conceded at least two goals in each of their last three games.

Yet the individual quality at their disposal should get United through. Burnley have been too easy to play against for much of the season and that will cost them here.

Over 3.5 goals - 10/11 (Paddy Power)

Burnley will not be relegated if they fall to defeat here, but they are running out of time to clamber out of the drop zone for the first time all season.

Vincent Kompany’s side probably need to win three of their four remaining matches to have a chance of finishing above the dreaded dotted line.

Manchester United have shown time and time again that they can be got at, so we will not see Burnley meekly sit back on Saturday.

If they fall behind, the visitors will be obliged to go on the attack in search of an equaliser. Their attitude, combined with United’s openness, means we should be in store for a high-scoring encounter at Old Trafford.

Remarkably, each of United’s last five games have featured over 3.5 goals. There is a good chance their next one will follow suit.

Bruno Fernandes to score any time - 17/10 (Paddy Power)

Not for the first time, Bruno Fernandes stepped up to the plate when Manchester United needed him in midweek.

With Sheffield United 2-1 up at Old Trafford, Fernandes dispatched the equaliser from the penalty spot and then scored a stunning strike to put his team 3-2 up.

The Portugal international is having a strong end to the season. He has scored seven goals in his last five appearances, compared to eight in his 39 outings before that.

Several United players have underperformed this term, but Fernandes is not among them. One of the most productive creators in the Premier League, he has rediscovered his scoring touch of late.

Burnley are not the hardest team to play through, so Fernandes will get plenty of space between the lines this weekend.
