Former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has emerged as a strong contender to take over at Bayern Munich this summer.

Bayern Munich had plans to ask Julian Nagelsmann to return to the club to replace Thomas Tuchel, who will leave at the end of the season.

But after the Germany national team manager signed a new contract with the country until 2026, the Bundesliga giants have been left shocked and looking for an alternative.

According to L'Equipe, Bayern's managerial search could see them turn to Rangnick in what would be a surprise move.

The 65-year-old is currently in charge of the Austrian national team but is well-remembered for his poor stint at United.

The German coach took interim charge of the Red Devils in November 2021 until the end of the season but led the club to their worst points-total record in Premier League history.

United finished sixth with 58 points and the plan to keep Rangnick in a consultancy role was canned.

He also boasts the lowest win rate of all United managers in Premier League history at 37.93 per cent.

After 29 games in charge, Rangnick oversaw 11 win, 10 draws and eight defeats - scoring 37 and conceding 37.

Nevertheless, Bayern are only keen on someone to keep the seat warm until Xabi Alonso decides to leave Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spaniard was the top target of the Munich hierarchy but he revealed that he is not going anywhere after leading Leverkusen to a first-ever Bundesliga title this season.

While Rangnick's spell at United might not go down in history as a major success, the German coach has had an extensive career in sport.

German football expert Constantin Eckner reveals that Thomas Tuchel could be sacked before Champions League second leg against Arsenal, with Bayern Munich out of all competitions

He is credited as one of the pioneers of gegenpressing tactics, utilised by Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, while his role at Red Bull as director of football oversaw a widely successful youth development system that has churned out a list of top stars.

Other managers linked with Bayern Munich include Zinedine Zidane and Roberto De Zerbi while the German giants could still end the season with silverware after reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
